Urban Design and Walkability: Lessons Learnt from Iranian Traditional Cities

نویسندگان

چکیده

Physical activity is connected to public health in many ways, and walking its most popular form. Modern planning models have been applied cities manage rapid urban expansions. However, this practice has led low level of walkability strong car-dependency today’s cities. Hence, study aims provide a review the promising design parameters affecting walkability, using Frank Lawrence’s theory “Objectively Measured Urban Form” (density, connectivity accessibility, mixed-use development) as basis discussion. The second part paper takes case approach, through discussing main elements traditional Iranian (mosques, bazaars, residential quarters, alleyways) analyses their impacts on promoting walkability. This concludes that incorporating inherent values will complement modern practices.

Lessons learnt from errors in radiotherapy centers

Background: The purpose of this work is to discover and analyze errors and incidents in some radiotherapy centers, and to introduce methods that could reduce their occurrences, especially those which had happened due to the use of improper and inadequate equipment. This work is a first step toward clarifying the role of education in a risk-conscious culture, and changing the attitude of radioth...

Generative Urban Modeling: a Design Work Flow for Walkability-optimized Cities

This paper presents an urban analysis work flow using a Rhinoceros/Grasshopper massing tool. The tool utilizes terrain elevation models as part of the design process to subdivide sites and generate urban form to be explored parametrically. It can then be linked to various performance assessment methods. As a proof of concept, the study uses a walkability calculator for three urban form alternat...

Nature-Based Solutions Accelerating Urban Sustainability Transitions in Cities: Lessons from Dresden, Genk and Stockholm Cities

Nature based solutions are amongst other practices that transition initiatives work with when intervening in their place and change its fabric. Focusing on the actors establishing, driving and scaling these solutions in and across cities, we come to evince that nature-based solutions have transformative social impact since they mediate new social relations and new social configurations contribu...

An Evaluation and Design Support System for Urban Walkability

We present an operational proposal for the evaluation of walkability. Its distinguishing characteristic in conceptualising walkability is to take into account and combine three distinct elements in a multicriteria evaluation model: the availability of attractive destinations, their effective distances along a detailed representation of the street network and the qualities relevant to walkabilit...
